Small Clinic Has Big Impact on a Rural Community
Wallowa County Health Care District serves the remote, scenic Wallowa Valley of far northeastern Oregon. The mission of the district is to provide premier healthcare to the community. To further that aim, WCHCD has worked with Clark/Kjos Architects to design three clinics in the county’s largest towns, of which Wallowa clinic is the most recent. To improve speed to market, WCHCD purchased a neglected small manufacturing building along the main highway to remodel and expand into this rural clinic.
Services to be provided include primary care, immediate care, X-ray, behavioral health, patient education, and physical rehabilitation, all within 5,700 square feet. Design goals were to transform the previous building and give this clinic a welcoming, community feel. The rehab gym and community education room have a separate entrance to allow for different hours of operation from the medical clinic. We followed functional design standards and branding/image choices from our previous clinics for WCHCD. The facility has been well-received as a community asset, making healthcare services more accessible, providing local jobs, and improving the image of the city with a renovated building in a prominent location.
