Recently, our very own Evidence-Based Design/Research Lead, Evon Calabrese attended the invite only “Intentional Spaces Summit 2023”event in Washington DC. The summit, hosted by The International Arts + Mind Lab , Johns Hopkins Medicine, Pedersen Brain Institute, Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture, focused on how architecture and interior design can play a major role in overall health and wellbeing.
We asked Evon what her biggest takeaway was from the inaugural summit and she noted that the physical spaces we inhabit have a direct impact on our “inner state,” which is the relationship between our brain and other bodily functions. She added “Considering humans spend more time indoors than some whale species spend underwater, our interior environments should be doing more than just reducing harm; the spaces we inhabit can have the ability to contribute to our healing. In order for this area of study to continue expanding, it is essential that a bi-directional relationship exists between designers and researchers with continual input from the communities these buildings serve.”
