Creating Safe Spaces For Healing
The Mary Bridge Adolescent Behavioral Health Unit at Tacoma General Hospital is the only one of its kind in Pierce County. To meet the growing demand for behavioral health services in its' community, this facility provides access to adolescents in a mental health crisis. The 27-bed inpatient unit serves the unique needs of adolescents between 13 and 18 years of age with 24-hour inpatient care, a therapy curriculum designed around the individual needs of the patient and family, and access to mental health crisis services for adolescents and their families. We designed the spaces to reflect the dignity and respect for each patient's unique needs throughout their care journey. Using specialized products to keep patients and staff safe was imperative in this environment. Still, the design creates a positive environment for therapy and healing by creating a sense of normalcy and inspiration through natural daylight, soft forms, color, and open space.
